Welcome to Emperor Butterflies

Autumn Term 1

This half term, the pupils in Emperor Butterflies have been settling smoothly into school life. They have been busy exploring the classroom and its resources, building friendships, working alongside their peers, engaging closely with their teachers, and learning daily routines. Each day has followed a consistent structure, with each morning beginning the same way up until break time: pupils have started every day by putting away their belongings upon arrival, followed by sensory circuits, registration, phonics, write dance, maths, reading, and snack, leading into their break.

Autumn Term 2

During the second half of the autumn term, Emperor Butterflies explored various festivals and events that take place in November and December. The pupils learned about the Hindu festival of Diwali, creating vibrant patterns with coloured rice and making fireworks pictures on black paper using chalk.

We also observed Remembrance Day, during which the pupils used apples to print poppy pictures.

As part of Anti-Bullying Week, the pupils participated in Odd Socks Day. They came to school wearing odd socks to promote individuality and celebrate differences under the theme of "Choose Respect." They also designed their own odd socks by creating colourful patterns on sock templates.

To conclude the term, the pupils learned about the Christian festival of Christmas. They helped decorate the class Christmas tree, made Christmas cards for their families, enjoyed a festive Christmas party, and were thrilled by a special visit from Father Christmas.

Spring Term 1

We started the new year with a fantastic Creative Arts Week, where pupils collaborated to create a whole-class collage inspired by Henri Rousseau's Tiger in a Tropical Storm. The pupils examined Rousseau’s painting up close using magnifying glasses before experimenting with paint techniques to create a variety of textured papers. Once dry, they tore the paper into pieces and carefully arranged them to form a stunning collage of Rousseau’s tiger.

We also celebrated Chinese New Year with a special storytelling session led by Mrs Merriman, who shared a story about the traditions and customs of this festive occasion. Pupils explored key items from the story, including new clothes, lucky red envelopes, and Chinese lanterns. The highlight of the celebration was tasting delicious noodles, which the children thoroughly enjoyed!

During Cultural Celebration Week, each class explored a different country from around the world. Emperor Butterflies focused on India, creating their own Indian flags and enjoyed making naan bread and mango salsa. The children loved using their senses to explore the mango—especially knowing it had travelled all the way from India!
